Under the Lights

Mile High Challenge 5 Post-Race Press Release

Centennial, CO (September 13, 2011) – It was a balmy Saturday afternoon with a slight breeze, just enough to take the edge off the summer heat, as drivers started filling up the bleachers for the MHC Race #5, Race after Dark, driver meeting. The race started with qualifying in the sunlight, pre-finals with the sun setting, and finals under the lights with a full moon in the night sky!  Qualifying was smooth sailing, with the pre-final and final races bringing on a bit more excitement trackside. The night was filled with great racing in every class with fun to be had by all, but the Pomeroy CARSTAR Micro Max and KRT Rotax Senior classes put on the best shows of the night!

With the sun setting, shadows on the track, and kids blowing bubbles around the paddock, Pomeroy CARSTAR Micro Max put on a great show for their pre-final and 15 lap main event. Cody Dempster (22), Hannah Greenemeier (8) and Fowler Keesling (58) had the top 3 positions for the main where they, along with Brody Shucard (33), battled it out hard, a battle they had been fighting all season long. Drivers were bumper to nose, putting pressure on each other along the Continental Divide through the Bus Stop, with the intensity climbing when Cody and David Rafailov (459) took a downhill slide and were black flagged, which changed the dynamics on the track significantly! Hannah moved up to first and Fowler kept trying to close the door on her, but in the end, our 7-10 year olds finished with Hannah in 1st, Fowler in 2nd and Brody in 3rd.

KRT Rotax Senior has offered some of the best racing of the season, and the most exciting race of this night, with Ben Schermerhorn (105), Connor Thomas (131) and Will Owen (123) racing in the pre-final with just one, one-thousandth of a second separating them when Schermerhorn and Thomas drove side by side into the Bus Stop, neither backing off, and drama ensued with a crash, ending that race for them both, giving way for Tyler Edwards (145), Mitch Carey (620) and Tim Otto (44) to move into the top 3 positions. Journey was blaring over the radio with “Don’t Stop Believing”, as the 20 lap main event got underway with Schermerhorn, Thomas and Owen hoping to fight their way back to their well fought for positions. Schermerhorn closed in fast and made his move to cut into 3rd and then fought his way to 2nd where an intense bumper to bumper race ensued with Edwards. Edwards hung on tightly and did not give up and maintained his lead to take 1st place, Schermerhorn in a hot 2nd and Thomas, who fought his way back to the top, took 3rd for the final! Awesome finish in Senior!

One Racegear DD2 Masters and Hanley Motorsports DD2 was another battle, as the racers paired off two by two and the main fight was for first and second with Brian Robson (16) and Jack Warrington (27) alternating, edging each other out throughout the race for an exciting finish with Warrington taking 1st, Robson in 2nd, and Zarlengo in 3rd!

KRT Rotax Masters got underway with Jack Warrington (711), Scott Falcone (99) and Russ Johnson (26) in the top 3 positions for their 20 lap main. Falcone got the punch and for the first half of the race he and Warrington were clearly ahead of the other racers and competing for that first place position, when Warrington peeled off the track, giving Falcone an easy race to finish 1st , Warrington into 2nd and Lorie Hinton (31) in 3rd.

WS Gear Rotax Junior racers offered an exciting race with spin-outs and bumper to bumper racing as Jake Eidson (24), Jason Dempster (88) and Lindsay Brewer (21) rounded out the top three, in that order!

The Woodstone Group Spec 125 Shifter and Open Class closed out the “Race after Dark” with their engines revved, a standing start and the loudest race of the night! Ben Schermerhorn ruled the race with the best speed and Jack Bradley (38), AJ Noud (62x) and Tyler Hinton (88) took the top three podium positions for the Spec 125 Shifters!

As racers packed away their gear and got ready for the podium presentations, it was not hard to reflect on a great night of racing with some emotion as our American and Colorado flags were flying high, under a full moon, on the eve of the 10 year anniversary of 9.11. Gratitude goes out to all those who sacrificed and continue to sacrifice their lives everyday so that we are able to have the freedoms we have grown to cherish in this country.

Thanks to all the racers and their friends and family who made this a night to remember!

See you at Mile Challenge Race #6 on October 2nd!
